HURRICANE ERIN – CATEGORY 5 MONSTER IN THE ATLANTIC

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued its latest advisory on Hurricane Erin, which remains a Category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 165 mph. Erin continues to churn in the Atlantic, staying north of the northern Leeward Islands but still lashing them with squalls, tropical-storm-force gusts, and dangerous surf.

🔹 Current Position

  • Location: About 290 miles north-northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • Movement: Northwest at 13 mph
  • Max Sustained Winds: 165 mph
  • Minimum Central Pressure: 924 mb

🔹 Impacts

  • Northern Leeward Islands & Puerto Rico: Outer rainbands causing gusty winds and localized flooding.
  • Dangerous Surf & Rip Currents: Expected along the northern Caribbean islands, Bahamas, and soon the U.S. East Coast.
  • U.S. East Coast: No direct impacts expected yet, but dangerous rip currents and high surf will spread northward this week.

🔹 Forecast Outlook

Erin is expected to remain a powerful hurricane over the next several days as it tracks northwest, then northward into the open Atlantic. Computer guidance keeps the system offshore of the U.S., but its massive wind field will continue to generate hazardous marine conditions.

⚠️ Residents along the East Coast should monitor updates closely. While a direct strike is not forecast, wave action, rip currents, and beach erosion will be widespread.
