TNW News Hurricane Center | Area to Watch: Tropical Wave Shows Signs of Gradual Development
Issued: Saturday, July 19, 2025 – 4:58 PM CDT

“Early to Advise. Early to Warn. First Alert.”
Hurricane Chief Todd Nardone reports:
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) and the TNW News Hurricane Division are closely monitoring a tropical wave located approximately 1,000 miles west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. The wave is currently situated between two plumes of Saharan Dust, limiting its ability to organize rapidly.
Despite the surrounding dry air, some convection has developed, and gradual development of this system is possible over the next several days as it tracks westward through the central tropical Atlantic.
Notably, the European model (EURO) is forecasting the formation of a small low-pressure system in this region by early next week. If conditions remain marginally favorable, the disturbance could become a tropical depression or even a tropical storm for a brief period.
However, upper-level wind shear and continued dry air intrusion are likely to become more prominent in the longer range, creating a hostile environment that could cause the system to weaken or dissipate before it ever approaches land. EURO projections currently support this weakening trend before the system nears the Lesser Antilles.
Current Outlook:
System: Tropical wave ~1,000 miles WSW of Cape Verde Islands
Development Potential: Low to Moderate over the next 5 days
Land Impact: Not expected
Forecast Trend: Likely weakening before reaching the islands
This is a developing situation, and the TNW News Hurricane Center will continue to provide frequent updates on the storm’s progression. For now, this remains an early-season reminder to stay informed and hurricane ready.
