Atlantic Tropics Update – Sunday Morning Briefing

The TNW Hurricane Operations Center is closely monitoring two systems in the Atlantic basin. While both systems currently pose low chances of development over the next 7 days, the situation may evolve as we move further into the peak of the hurricane season.

šŸ”¹ 1. Frontal Low off the Southeast U.S. Coast

A frontal low-pressure area just offshore the North Carolina coast continues to show signs of limited organization. While tropical or subtropical development is not likely, some characteristics may form as it drifts northeastward through Monday.

  • Chance of Tropical Formation (Next 7 Days): 10–20%
  • Expected Impacts: Gusty winds, rain squalls, and coastal surf along parts of the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic coast

šŸ”¹ 2. Tropical Wave Approaching from Africa

A tropical wave is expected to emerge from the West African coast over the next 24–36 hours. Once over open water, slow development is possible as it moves westward into the central tropical Atlantic by midweek.

  • Chance of Tropical Formation (Next 7 Days): 20–30%
  • Monitoring Zone: 30°W to 45°W, south of 20°N
  • Environmental Outlook: Warm sea surface temperatures but impacted by Saharan Air Layer (SAL)

šŸŒ Environmental Analysis & Satellite Overview

  • Atlantic Basin: Warming SSTs support long-term development.
  • Saharan Dust: Still suppressing convection in eastern MDR but beginning to retreat.
  • No active systems in the Gulf of Mexico or Caribbean at this time.
