HURRICANE ERIN – LATEST TRACK AND IMPACTS

BOLTON, VT – The TNW News Hurricane Operations Division is tracking Hurricane Erin, now a rapidly intensifying Category 4 hurricane, making its closest approach north of the Leeward Islands as of this morning.

Current Position & Observatory Data (Advisory 20A – 8:00 AM AST / 7:00 AM EDT):

Forecast & Hazards Ahead

  • Track Outlook: Erin is expected to move just north of the northern Leeward Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico over the weekend, before turning north early next week National Hurricane Center.
  • Intensification: Rapid strengthening continues, with potential for further fluctuations in intensity through the weekend National Hurricane Center.
  • Wind Field: Hurricane-force winds extend outward ~30 miles; tropical-storm-force winds expand up to ~125 miles, particularly to the north National Hurricane Center.
  • Rainfall: Outer bands could deliver 2–4 inches of rain, with localized totals of 6 inches possible across the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico — increasing risks of flash floods, urban flooding, landslides, and mudslides National Hurricane Center.
  • Marine Conditions: Expect dangerous surf and rip currents across the Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and Turks & Caicos — with impacts spreading to the Bahamas, Bermuda, and the U.S. East Coast early next week National Hurricane Center.

  • Tropical Storm Watches are in effect for St. Martin, St. Barthelemy, and Sint Maarten. Conditions are possible within the next 12 hours National Hurricane Center.
