The National Weather Service continues a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Aurora, Chicago, and surrounding areas in northeastern Illinois, now in effect until 9:00 p.m. CDT.

This system is moving eastward across the metro corridor, impacting rush-hour traffic and vulnerable power infrastructure.
Aurora: Positioned on the western flank, currently under heavy precipitation bands with embedded hail.
Chicago: Eastern edge now seeing rapidly increasing radar intensity and lightning spikes.
TNW’s forthcoming radar graphic will depict Aurora (left) and Chicago (right), overlaid with ComEd trucks and real-time PowerRD outage markers. “TNW News” will appear clearly across the top, with TNWweather.com prominently placed at the bottom.
The Air Quality Index is at Moderate levels (95–100 AQI) due to dust, humidity, and storm-induced particulates.
⚠️ Sensitive groups (e.g. asthma, COPD) are advised to remain indoors with filtered air if available.
Thousands remain without power in the storm’s wake. Active repairs underway.
