Sunday, June 8, 2025 – Aurora, Illinois —
A dangerous line of severe thunderstorms struck Aurora and surrounding communities in Kane and DuPage Counties Sunday afternoon, producing 60 MPH wind gusts and half-dollar-sized hail, prompting urgent warnings from the Chicago National Weather Service and local emergency officials.
Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were in effect:
Widespread reports of tree damage, power outages, and minor property destruction are coming in from cities such as Batavia, West Chicago, and Aurora.
Todd Nardone, TNW News General Manager and Hurricane Operations Chief, issued the following:
“This is not a hurricane, but these winds can act like one. Residents should stay in an interior room or basement and avoid mobile homes, cars, or any portable shelter. These storms are fast-moving and can do serious damage.”
A line of strong to locally severe storms is now crossing the I-55 corridor and will continue to move east through late afternoon. The main threats include a few wind gusts up to 60 MPH and isolated hail up to the size of quarters. TNW News encourages residents in the path of this storm to remain alert and ready to take cover as needed.
The TNW Weather Radar, powered in partnership with ABC 7 Chicago, tracked a violent squall line slicing across the western suburbs. Bright red and purple radar returns confirmed hail cores, strong wind signatures, and rapid eastward movement — consistent with the reports of widespread damage.
🚨 The TNW Weather Operations Center has activated its full monitoring protocol as part of this Severe Weather Operational Alert.
