BREAKING: SEVERE FLOODING POTENTIAL FOR AURORA AND CHICAGO AREA TOLLWAYS

AURORA, IL / CHICAGO METRO — The TNW News Breaking News Team, in coordination with the Weather Center Team and the Operations Division, has issued an updated Severe Flooding Potential Alert for Aurora and northeastern Illinois, including critical sections of the Chicago area tollway system.

At 1:22 PM CDT, TNW Weather Center confirmed that multiple viaducts along Chicago-area tollways are now experiencing flooding due to continuous high rainfall rates and poor drainage conditions.

🔴 OPERATIONAL ALERT: CHICAGO TOLLWAY FLOODING CONFIRMED

Flooding has been reported on:

  • I-290 (Eisenhower Expressway) underpasses
  • I-88 near Aurora
  • I-90 Kennedy Expressway viaducts near O'Hare
  • Portions of I-294 Tri-State Tollway

Illinois State Police and Tollway Authorities are urging drivers to use extreme caution or avoid flooded sections altogether. Crews are being deployed to block off severely impacted areas.

“We’ve entered a flash-flood emergency posture across parts of the western suburbs and now the tollway system,” said Todd Nardone, General Manager and Chief of the TNW Weather Operations Division. “This is no longer an isolated Aurora event—urban flash flooding has expanded across major transportation routes.”

🟠 Key Impact Zones:

  • Aurora City Streets: Farnsworth, Hill Ave, downtown corridors
  • Fox River: Rising above minor flood stage
  • Tollway System Viaducts: Standing water and blocked lanes
  • Chicago Expressways: Reduced speeds, hydroplaning risks

🚧 TNW SAFETY BULLETIN:

  • Avoid viaducts and underpasses—they are the first to flood
  • Do not attempt to drive through standing water on expressways
