šŸ”„ What’s Happening?

Smoke from ongoing Canadian wildfires is drifting into northern Illinois and significantly affecting the air quality across the Chicago metro, including Aurora, Naperville, and neighboring suburbs.

Thursday morning’s Air Quality Index (AQI) readings entered the ā€œUnhealthyā€ category in multiple areas, prompting action by the National Weather Service (NWS) and AirNow.gov.

🚨 Who’s At Risk?

According to public health guidelines, those especially vulnerable include:

  • šŸ§’ Children
  • šŸ‘µ Seniors
  • 😷 Individuals with asthma or chronic lung conditions

The NWS strongly urges these groups to limit outdoor exposure, particularly during the hottest part of the day or when haze is visible.

šŸ“‰ AQI Breakdown

Current readings range between 150–170 AQI, which falls in the ā€œUnhealthyā€ range. The primary pollutant is fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which penetrates deep into lungs and can trigger:

  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Eye irritation
  • Worsened asthma symptoms

šŸ›‘ What You Should Do Now

āœ… Stay Indoors with windows closed
āœ… Run air conditioners or purifiers on recirculation
āœ… Delay outdoor workouts or errands
āœ… Avoid refueling your vehicle before 7 PM

ā€œPeople with respiratory diseases such as asthma should limit prolonged outdoor exposure,ā€ the NWS said.

šŸš— Reduce Emissions While Alerts Are Active

To help reduce further pollution:

  • Combine driving errands into one trip
  • Use public transportation or carpool
  • Avoid idling your car for long periods

šŸ—ŗļø Where It’s Worst

Red zones on the AQI radar map show the most impacted areas, including:

  • Western Cook County
  • Kane County
  • DuPage County
  • Parts of Will and Kendall Counties
