Smoke from ongoing Canadian wildfires is drifting into northern Illinois and significantly affecting the air quality across the Chicago metro, including Aurora, Naperville, and neighboring suburbs.
Thursday morningās Air Quality Index (AQI) readings entered the āUnhealthyā category in multiple areas, prompting action by the National Weather Service (NWS) and AirNow.gov.
According to public health guidelines, those especially vulnerable include:
The NWS strongly urges these groups to limit outdoor exposure, particularly during the hottest part of the day or when haze is visible.
Current readings range between 150ā170 AQI, which falls in the āUnhealthyā range. The primary pollutant is fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which penetrates deep into lungs and can trigger:

Run air conditioners or purifiers on recirculation

Delay outdoor workouts or errands
ā
Avoid refueling your vehicle before 7 PM
āPeople with respiratory diseases such as asthma should limit prolonged outdoor exposure,ā the NWS said.
