TNW Weather Alert: Hurricane Watch for the Windward Islands

Alert:

A hurricane watch is now in effect for the Windward Islands. Tropical Storm Beryl, named at 11 PM on Friday, is moving towards the region and is expected to intensify into a hurricane by tonight or early tomorrow morning. The storm is projected to start as a Category 1 hurricane and may strengthen to a Category 2, possibly even reaching Category 3 or 4 status according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Current Status:

Tropical Storm Beryl is about 20 miles south of Barbados, moving at 17 mph with winds of 35 mph.

The storm is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by tonight or tomorrow.

Forecast:

Beryl will bring hurricane-force winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, and rough surf to the Windward Islands over the weekend and into early next week.

Hurricane watches have been issued for Barbados and other nearby islands.

Preparation:

Residents in the Windward Islands should finalize their hurricane preparations immediately.

Be aware that any new homeowners insurance policies purchased after the storm was named will not cover damage from this storm due to the 30-day waiting period.

Expected Impacts:

Widespread rainfall of 3 to 6 inches, leading to potential flooding, particularly north of Trinidad and Tobago.

Strong winds and storm surge will affect the islands from tonight into early next week.
