#BREAKING: Tropical Storm Milton has strengthened and is now expected to impact the west coast of Florida between Tuesday and Wednesday. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has released the first cone of uncertainty, forecasting that Milton could make landfall as a high-end Category 2 or possibly a Category 3 hurricane.

Key Messages - Advisory 2:

4:00 PM CDT, Saturday, October 5, 2024

Intensification Likely:

Milton is expected to intensify rapidly while moving northeastward across the Gulf of Mexico. It may reach major hurricane strength (Category 3) before landfall on Florida’s west coast mid-week. Warmer-than-average Gulf waters are contributing to its rapid strengthening.

Increasing Risk of Life-Threatening Impacts:

There is a growing risk of life-threatening storm surge and destructive winds along the west coast of Florida, starting late Tuesday into Wednesday. The most intense surge is expected south of the storm’s eye. Residents should review hurricane plans and follow guidance from local officials.

Heavy Rainfall and Flooding Risk:

Heavy rainfall may impact Florida starting Sunday and Monday, bringing flash flooding risks ahead of the storm. From Tuesday to Wednesday night, Milton is expected to bring widespread rainfall, increasing the risk of flash floods, urban flooding, and river flooding.

Additional Thoughts from Todd Nardone:

Landfall Probabilities:

The highest chance of landfall currently lies between Hernando Beach and Everglades City, including possible tracks through Tampa Bay and Southwest Florida. Forecast models should become more precise over the next 24-48 hours. Updates on specific impacts like wind and surge will follow as more data is available.

Surge Concerns:

With Milton’s southwest approach, areas south of the storm’s center are in prime danger for dangerous storm surge. Every mile of landfall location will influence surge levels, but even regions north of the center could experience surge after landfall.

Preparation Reminders:

Remain calm while finalizing hurricane preparedness this weekend. Stock up on essential supplies without overbuying and be considerate of neighbors. Follow evacuation advice from local officials if necessary.
