Overview: Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to bring significant freshwater flooding and structural damage to the Texas coast, particularly around Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande region. Conditions are expected to be dangerous throughout the day. Historical impacts similar to Claudette (2003) and Dolly (2008) are expected, which included downed trees, power outages, and structural damage. These storms also resulted in fatalities due to rough surf.

Current Situation:

  • Location: Beryl made landfall near Mexico as a Category 2 hurricane with 110 mph winds on July 5th.
  • Status: It weakened over the Yucatán Peninsula but is expected to re-strengthen to a Category 1 hurricane by late Sunday night into Monday or early Tuesday morning.

Impact:

  • Flooding: Anticipated significant freshwater flooding.
  • Structural Damage: Potential for considerable structural damage.
  • Safety Measures: Governor Greg Abbott has declared a disaster order.
  • Rough Surf: Similar to Claudette (2003) and Dolly (2008), rough surf could be deadly. Exercise extreme caution.

Precautions:

  • Supplies: Stock up on necessary supplies this weekend.
  • Power: Charge all essential devices in anticipation of power outages.
  • Hurricane Insurance: If you don't have hurricane insurance, obtain it by Monday. Note that it will not cover Tropical Storm or Hurricane Beryl due to the 30-day waiting period.
