Severe Weather Threat Shifts East with Intense Heat; Tropical Storm Hone Weakens After Impacting Hawaii

Daily Weather Newsletter - August 26, 2024

Good Morning, Weather Enthusiasts!

Here's what you need to know as we kick off another week filled with intense weather events:

🌡️ Heatwave Intensifies Across Central US, Shifting Eastward:

A strong high-pressure ridge is moving eastward, bringing summer's heat back with a vengeance. Today, the ridge will shift toward the Ohio Valley, allowing moisture to surge northward. This means the Midwest will feel the full brunt of mid-summer heat through the end of the week. As this ridge continues to shift eastward on Tuesday and Wednesday, cities like Chicago, St. Louis, and Atlanta could be on the verge of breaking daily high-temperature records. Relief is in sight, however, as a cold front is expected to bring cooler temperatures into the first week of September. Remember to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged outdoor activity in extreme heat.

⛈️ Enhanced Risk for Severe Weather Across Northern Great Plains:

Our next weather system is brewing over the High Plains, with severe storms expected later today. The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded the Northern Great Plains to an Enhanced Risk (Level 3/5) for severe weather. Expect strong winds, large hail, and the possibility of a few tornadoes. Cities like Grand Forks, Bemidji, and International Falls are at heightened risk.

This system will move eastward, reaching the Great Lakes by Tuesday. With hot temperatures and ample humidity, storms could intensify across cities like Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Cleveland. Keep your weather radios and apps handy for alerts.

🌀 Tropical Storm Hone Weakens After Hammering Hawaii's Big Island:

Tropical Storm Hone, which impacted Hawaii's Big Island over the weekend as a Category 1 hurricane, has weakened significantly. Now a tropical storm, Hone is slowly moving westward away from the islands. The storm brought heavy rainfall, with some areas receiving more than 2 feet, and wind gusts topping 90 mph.

Despite its weakening, Hone continues to pose a risk with gusty winds and rain as it drifts away from the Hawaiian Islands. This storm was the first named system in the Central Pacific since 2019. Stay tuned for updates on other developing systems in the Pacific.

Stay Prepared:

  • Hydration and Shade: With extreme heat in parts of the Midwest and East, make sure to stay hydrated and avoid excessive time outdoors.
  • Severe Weather Preparedness: Keep an eye on the forecast and have a plan in place if severe weather threatens your area.
  • Tropical Weather Awareness: The Pacific is active, and while Hone weakens, other systems could follow. Be prepared if you’re in an area at risk.

Daily Weather Tip: When dealing with extreme heat, wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, and try to schedule outdoor activities in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.
