we've managed to avoid showers so far this morning, but later this afternoon and evening, expect increased coverage, with some storms bringing heavy rainfall. Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible, accompanied by torrential downpours and gusty winds.
Climate Outlook:
Looking ahead, the Climate Prediction Center favors warmer and drier than normal conditions from late August into September. While the hurricane season is expected to quiet down over the next two weeks, Weather 2020 forecasts an uptick in activity as we move into the peak of the season.
Remembering Hurricane Andrew:
Today marks 32 years since Tropical Storm Andrew was just a smudge on the satellite, barely raising concerns. On that day, I noted the building high pressure to the north, which was unsettling. By 5:00 PM, Andrew was 1,400 miles from Miami, still weak due to a large upper-level low. The forecasts were uncertain, but there were signs that the storm could strengthen.
On WTVJ/NBC Miami that evening, I introduced the proto-cone. Back then, graphics systems didn't allow for the filled-in cones we use today—that innovation came in 1996. Forecast errors were substantial in 1992, so the proto-cone arcs extended from Cuba to the Carolinas. The National Hurricane Center's forecast was solid, relying on the NHC90 model, though computer models weren’t publicly accessible.
As Andrew approached, I advised viewers to "Watch Andrew" over the weekend, not fully realizing the magnitude of what was to come.
Hurricane Ernesto:
Hurricane Ernesto is moving into the North Atlantic, where it will soon transition into a non-tropical system as it encounters cooler waters. It may brush Newfoundland in far eastern Atlantic Canada tonight, but the worst of the storm should remain offshore. Ernesto has already brought deadly beach conditions to the U.S. East Coast, including claiming two lives in South Carolina due to powerful rip currents. You can read more about its impacts here and the dangers it presented along the East Coast.
Tropical Development:
Several robust tropical disturbances are emerging from Africa, but none are positioned to avoid the dry air over the tropical Atlantic. Therefore, no development is expected in the next week.
