As Thanksgiving travel ramps up, a powerful winter storm system is set to affect millions across the U.S., bringing rain, snow, and strong winds. These conditions could significantly impact early holiday travel plans for those trying to beat the Thanksgiving rush.

Storm System 1: Midwest and Northern Plains

The first storm system is already underway, delivering widespread rain and snow to the Northern Tier and Upper Midwest after triggering severe weather across the Central and Southern Plains on Monday.

Winter Weather Alerts:

  • North Dakota: Heavy snow and blowing conditions are forecast, with Winter Storm Warnings issued for cities including Minot, Bottineau, and Devils Lake.
  • Snowfall estimates: 4-7 inches in many areas, with wind gusts reaching up to 50 mph, creating hazardous travel conditions.
  • Travel advisory: Drivers are advised to carry emergency supplies like flashlights, food, and water.

"This storm is bringing the season's first significant snowfall to the Upper Midwest, marking the region's transition into winter," stated the TNWWeather.com meteorology team.

Snow totals will vary:

  • Dustings are expected in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
  • Heavier accumulations of up to a foot are likely near North Dakota’s border with Canada.

Storm System 2: Mid-Atlantic and Northeast

As the first system weakens, a second, more potent storm will emerge in the Ohio River Valley and Great Lakes by midweek.

Key Impacts:

  • Appalachian Mountains: Heavy snow is expected in higher elevations, with strong winds potentially causing power outages.
  • Major cities along the I-95 corridor: Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston will see primarily rain, with limited snow accumulation.
  • Snowfall estimates: Most locations in the Northeast will see 1-3 inches of snow, with a foot or more possible in the Appalachian highlands.

The National Weather Service in Charleston, West Virginia, has issued Winter Storm Watches for areas such as Elkins, advising of travel disruptions caused by snow and high winds.
