Good morning, subscribers!
As we enter the peak of hurricane season, several systems in the Pacific are capturing our attention. Here’s what you need to know:
Hurricane Gilma Intensifies
Hurricane Gilma, currently far off the south tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula, has strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 85 mph. Gilma is expected to reach Category 3 status by later today as it continues to intensify nearly 1,000 miles away from land. The storm's path is currently projected to stay well away from any landmasses, but the National Hurricane Center is closely monitoring its progress.
Potential Threats to Hawaii
Forecasters are also tracking Tropical Depression One C, a new system in the Eastern Pacific. While this depression is still about 1,190 miles away from Hilo, Hawaii, it is expected to move westward, potentially coming close to the Hawaiian Islands by the weekend. There are still many unknowns about the impacts, but the National Weather Service office in Honolulu is urging residents to stay prepared as it is the peak of hurricane season.
Hawaiian Wildfire Concerns
Adding to the challenges, Hawaii is bracing for an extreme wildfire potential this weekend, one year after the devastating Lahaina fire. The approaching tropical systems, combined with high winds, could exacerbate conditions, leading to dangerous situations across the islands.
Ernesto’s Impact on the Northeast U.S. Coast
In the Atlantic, Hurricane Ernesto continues to strengthen, bringing dangerous beach conditions to the Northeast U.S. coast and Atlantic Canada. Life-threatening surf and rip currents are likely to persist, and coastal flooding is a concern in southeastern Newfoundland, particularly along southwest-facing shorelines.
Looking Ahead
It will likely be a week before more definitive forecasts can be made regarding the potential impacts of Hurricane Gilma and Tropical Depression One C on Hawaii. In the meantime, it’s crucial for those in the path of these systems to stay informed and prepared for any changes.
