Flash Flood Warning for Fannin, Gilmer, Murray and Union Counties Through 3:00 AM Thursday

Breaking news alert for flash flood warning in Georgia counties.

North Georgia — The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Fannin County, Gilmer County, northwestern Union County and Murray County in north Georgia. The warning runs until 3:00 AM Eastern time Thursday, which is 2:00 AM Central.

What is happening:

Thunderstorms are dropping heavy rain across the warned area. Doppler radar showed storms producing downpours over counties that have already picked up between one and two inches of rain. Rain is falling at a rate of one to two inches per hour, and another one to two inches could fall before the warning ends. That pace can flood roads, creeks and low-lying ground in a hurry, especially after dark.

Local impacts:

Flash flooding is possible across the warned counties through the overnight hours. Small streams and normally dry low spots can rise fast. Roads in low areas and near creeks could go under water with little warning. Driving at night makes the danger harder to spot, since flooded pavement can look like ordinary wet road.

What to do:

- If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.

- Turn around, do not drown. Never drive through a flooded road — most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- Stay off roads in the warned area overnight if you can, and keep away from creeks and drainage ditches.

- If you must travel, use a route on higher ground and never cross water of unknown depth.
