M5.0 Earthquake Strikes South of the Fiji Islands — November 4

Breaking news alert for a 5.0 earthquake near Fiji Islands.

South of the Fiji Islands — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck south of the Fiji Islands on Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

What happened:

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake was recorded south of the Fiji Islands at 3:24 PM Central Time on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. The quake struck at a depth of about 508 kilometers, or roughly 316 miles, below the surface — an unusually deep earthquake. Deep earthquakes of this kind typically produce less shaking at the surface than shallow quakes of the same size.

Impacts:

No tsunami warning was issued for this earthquake, and the Geological Survey listed no felt reports or damage reports in its initial summary. Because the quake was so deep and centered offshore south of the island chain, significant shaking on land was not expected.

What to do:

- If you feel shaking, drop to the ground, take cover under sturdy furniture, and hold on until the shaking stops.

- Stay away from windows, bookcases, and anything that could fall.

- After shaking stops, check for hazards such as broken glass, gas leaks, and damaged power lines before moving around.

- Be ready for aftershocks, which can follow a larger earthquake.
