Helene has been downgraded to a tropical storm early Friday morning as it makes its way through Georgia, following a devastating landfall in Florida as a powerful Category 4 hurricane. The storm has caused widespread destruction across the southeastern U.S., leaving more than 3 million people without power across Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

Helene’s Ongoing Threats

Although the storm has weakened, Helene remains a significant danger. Heavy rainfall and damaging winds are continuing to affect much of the Southeast. Widespread flooding, particularly in coastal areas, has caused significant damage, and storm surges have left entire communities underwater. In Atlanta, Georgia, emergency responders are conducting wire rescues to save residents trapped by sudden flooding.

Power Outages Across Four States

The power outages are extensive:

  • More than 1.1 million Floridians are without electricity.
  • Over 1 million residents in Georgia are affected.
  • 1.1 million outages have been reported in South Carolina.
  • 400,000 people in North Carolina are also without power.

Utility companies have mobilized to restore electricity, but the damage to infrastructure means that full recovery could take days in many areas. The situation is being closely monitored, with teams working tirelessly to repair power grids.

Storm Surge and Flooding Concerns

Helene's landfall in Florida’s Gulf Coast created a catastrophic storm surge, inundating coastal communities. While the storm has slowed down to 70 mph winds, the threat of flash flooding and storm surge still remains in several areas. The National Weather Service has lifted all hurricane warnings, but tropical storm warnings are still active for south-central Georgia and parts of the Florida Big Bend.

Rescue Operations in Georgia

In addition to coastal areas, inland regions like Atlanta are experiencing extreme flooding. Emergency crews are working around the clock, with swift water rescue teams deployed to assist those stranded by floodwaters. Atlanta residents are advised to remain indoors and avoid driving on flooded streets.
