MIAMI – Tropical Storm Sara, the 18th named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, has formed over the Caribbean Sea, bringing a high risk of life-threatening impacts to Central America. Forecasters with the TNW News Operations Department warn of potential catastrophic impacts, including flash flooding and mudslides, as Sara moves westward toward Honduras and neighboring regions.

TRACK TROPICAL STORM SARA: LIVE MAPS, UPDATES & FORECASTS

The TNW Hurricane Operations Division, led by Chief Todd Nardone, has provided updated data on Sara’s location and strength. Currently situated over 200 miles east of Honduras, Sara is packing maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and is moving west at about 15 mph. Forecasters anticipate the storm will approach the coast of Honduras on Friday and linger in the area through the weekend, possibly bringing devastating weather conditions.

Storm Surge and Heavy Rainfall Expected
The TNW Hurricane Operations Division has warned of extensive rainfall, with projections indicating that parts of Honduras could see 10-20 inches of rain, with isolated areas potentially receiving up to 30 inches. Flooding and mudslides are likely along the mountainous regions, particularly near the Sierra La Esperanza. Other areas across Honduras, Belize, El Salvador, eastern Guatemala, and western Nicaragua may experience 5-10 inches of rainfall, with locally higher amounts, increasing the risk of significant flash flooding.

A storm surge of 1-3 feet is also expected along parts of the Honduran coastline, along with destructive waves, which pose additional risks to coastal communities.

Travel Impacts
American Airlines and United Airlines are offering waivers for select flight changes, while Carnival Cruise Line is monitoring the situation closely. Passengers are encouraged to opt-in for alerts for the latest updates, as the cruise line collaborates with TNW’s Hurricane Operations Division, the National Hurricane Center, and port authorities.
