California’s wildfire crisis has reached a dangerous new level this weekend as two major blazes burn across the state—one now officially a “megafire” and another forcing thousands from their homes.
The Gifford Fire, spanning San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties, has exploded to over 104,000 acres with containment holding at just 21%. Driven by triple-digit heat, bone-dry terrain, and shifting winds, the fire has become California’s largest wildfire of 2025. At least seven injuries—both civilian and firefighting—have been confirmed. Hundreds remain under evacuation warnings as crews battle flames in rugged, inaccessible areas.
Meanwhile, Southern California’s Canyon Fire has burned 5,370 acres near Castaic and Piru, stretching across Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Containment is currently 28%, but the blaze is threatening neighborhoods, power infrastructure, and recreation areas. Thousands are under evacuation orders or warnings as more than 390 personnel, aided by helicopters, engines, and bulldozers, fight to gain control.
Officials warn that extreme heat and persistent drought will continue to fuel dangerous fire conditions across the state in the coming days.
