🚨 NYC Underwater: Flash Flood Emergency Strikes Nation’s Largest City
NEW YORK CITY – Torrential rain overwhelmed New York’s infrastructure Thursday night into Friday morning, forcing a shutdown of subways, roads, and rail lines. A flash flood emergency remains in effect across the metro area.
🚇 Subways Deluged, Roads Flooded
Multiple stations, including Grand Central and 7th Avenue, were submerged under rushing water. Commuters scrambled to escape as water poured over platforms and stairwells. The MTA halted numerous lines for safety.
On city streets, emergency responders rescued drivers stranded on the Clearview Expressway and other submerged roads, including one scene where a semi-truck was nearly submerged in floodwaters that reached 10 feet deep.
🛑 Emergency Declarations in Effect
New York’s mayor declared a local state of emergency, and the governor extended statewide alerts across impacted counties. Officials continue urging residents to stay indoors and avoid travel as more rain is expected.
✈️ Travel Disruption Continues
More than 1,100 flights were canceled at JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark, with thousands more delayed. Amtrak temporarily suspended service between Philadelphia and Wilmington due to track flooding.
📰 What Comes Next
Crews are working to clear storm drains, restore transit service, and assess damage. Flood watches remain active through late Friday. The National Weather Service warns that flash flooding could continue into the weekend as the saturated ground struggles to absorb additional rainfall.
