Tuesday, March 17, 2026 | 12:45 PM CDT Issued by: National Weather Service Chicago / Romeoville, IL

🚨 SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT: ARCTIC SURGE & CLIPPER IMPACTS

ILLINOIS RECOVERY SECTOR – The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Romeoville, in coordination with the TNW News Breaking News Team, has issued an updated meteorological assessment for Northern Illinois. As recovery efforts continue following the recent EF3 tornado event, a secondary winter system is now moving into the region.

1. OVERNIGHT CLIPPER FORECAST

  • TIMING: Light snow will overspread the area from west to east starting after 7:00 PM CDT tonight.
  • ACCUMULATIONS: General totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected across the Kankakee and Chicago metro sectors.
  • IMPACT: Fresh snow will cover existing tornado debris, creating hazardous conditions for cleanup crews. Icy patches are expected on all secondary roads as temperatures remain well below freezing.

2. TEMPERATURE TRENDS (THE DEEP FREEZE)

  • CURRENT CONDITIONS: Temperatures remain 15–20 degrees below seasonal norms.
  • WIND CHILL: Sub-zero wind chills were recorded this morning at O'Hare and Greater Kankakee Airport. These conditions are expected to persist through the overnight hours.
  • SAFETY: NWS Romeoville advises those working outdoors in the Industrial Uptown recovery zone to limit exposure and wear insulated, wind-resistant layers.
