Potential for severe weather threatens area; heat advisory in effect

CHICAGO — Storms rolled through the Chicago area Wednesday morning and more could be on the way.


Scattered storms are likely mainly north of Chicago through lunchtime hours.


Following that, dry weather in which temps will climb.


A Heat Advisory has been issued for the Chicago area starting at noon on Wednesday. Highs in the lower 90s are expected and heat index values that could top out over 100 degrees.


Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and this evening. Storms could redevelop around 6 p.m.


A Heat Advisory is in effect starting at 12 p.m. Wednesday through 9 p.m. in the orange counties. Peak heat indices of 100-105 degrees are expected.


Drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning when possible and limit time in sun. Check on relatives and neighbors. Take precautions working and spending time outdoors.


Cooling Centers Open in Chicago


The city’s six community service centers are activated. The are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. all week.

  • Garfield Center – 10 S. Kedzie Ave. (24 Hours)
  • King Center – 4314 S. Cottage Grove
  • North Area Center – 845 W. Wilson Ave.
  • South Chicago Center – 8650 S. Commercial Ave.
  • Trina Davila Center – 4312 W. North Ave.

During hours of operation, residents can also find relief in one of the City’s Chicago Public Library locations and Chicago Park District fieldhouses as well as splash pads located throughout the city.


Hot and stormy weather continues


A rain-free, sun drenched Thursday is predicted–and temps will soar into the 90s then and likely again Friday when storm chances are likely to rise again.


TONIGHT: Scattered fast developing may develop across 40 to 50% of the metro area through 10pm tonight. The strongest storms may produce downpours, strong winds and hail.  Beyond 10pm, partly cloudy, hazy, warm and muggy. Some patchy ground fog in some low lying surrounding areas. Low 71.


THURSDAY: Sunshine, hazy, hot and humid with cottony summertime cumulus clouds. High 95—but mid to upper 80s on area beaches. Peak inland afternoon heat indices: 100 to 105.


THURSDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy, warm and muggy. Several gusty t-storms possible—but likely impacting just 10 to 30% of the area.


FRIDAY: Sun and building summertime cumulus clouds, becoming windy, intensely hot and quite humid. Prospects of t-storms increase later in the day—but storms are likely to become widespread Friday night—some potentially several and drenching rain producers. High 96 with peak Friday afternoon heat indices 102 to 108 ahead of any t-storms.


SATURDAY: Markedly cooler and turning breezy from the northeast and less humid. Any showers—mainly southern sections—exit giving way to partly sunny skies. High 77—but mid to upper 60s lakeshore.


SUNDAY: Mostly sunny, comfortable and seasonably warm with continuing northeast winds. High 81—but low 70s lakeshore.


MONDAY: Partly sunny, warm. Comfortable humidities. High 86—but mid to upper 70s beaches.


TUESDAY: Sun gives way to incoming clouds with time. Chance of some late day showers—better chance of showers and t-storms at night. High 87—70s lakeshore.


WEDNESDAY: Some cloudy periods, quite warm and more humid. Showers and thunderstorms possible. High 91.
