Lake County, Illinois and Kenosha County, Wisconsin — The National Weather Service office in Milwaukee/Sullivan has extended a Flood Warning for the Fox River Lower near New Munster, covering Lake County in Illinois and Kenosha County in Wisconsin. The warning remains in effect until noon on Friday, September 25.

What is happening: Minor flooding is occurring along the Fox River near New Munster, and forecasters expect it to continue through Friday morning. As of 9 p.m. Thursday, the river stood at 11.4 feet — above the 11.0-foot flood stage. The river is expected to drop below flood stage late Friday morning and continue falling in the days ahead.

Local impacts: At 11.5 feet, water reaches the yards of some homes in the Village of Salem Lakes and the Town of Wheatland, including along Riverside Drive and Shorewood Drive. Three to four inches of water covered 77th Street in the Town of Wheatland.

What to do:

- Turn around, don't drown. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- Never drive around barricades or through flooded roadways.

- Use caution when walking near riverbanks.

- The next update from the National Weather Service is expected Friday morning.
