New Munster area — The National Weather Service office in Milwaukee/Sullivan has extended a Flood Warning for the Fox River Lower near New Munster, covering Lake County in Illinois and Kenosha County in Wisconsin. The warning stays in effect until 4 p.m. CDT Friday.

What is happening: Minor flooding is continuing along the Fox River near New Munster in the wake of recent rains that dropped 3.5 to 4.5 inches across southeastern Wisconsin. At 4 a.m. Friday the river stood at 11.2 feet — above the 11.0-foot flood stage. The river peaked at 11.7 feet in the 24 hours before dawn and is expected to fall below flood stage late this morning, dropping toward 8.5 feet by next Thursday evening.

Where: The Fox River Lower near New Munster, affecting Lake County, Illinois and Kenosha County, Wisconsin.

When: Issued 4:41 a.m. CDT Friday, September 25; in effect until 4 p.m. CDT today.

Local impacts: Once the river reaches 11.0 feet, floodwater begins to cover 77th Street in the Town of Wheatland. Water is pressing close to homes along Riverside Drive, Shorewood Drive, and Highway W in the Village of Salem Lakes and the Town of Wheatland. The Fox River Park boat launch is also starting to flood.

What to do: Turn around, don't drown when you meet flooded roads — most flood deaths happen in vehicles. Do not drive around barricades or through water-covered streets. Use caution when walking near riverbanks, which may be unstable. The next official update from the National Weather Service is expected this afternoon.
