Kailua-Kona, Hawaii — What is happening: The Kona coast — Kailua-Kona, Captain Cook, and Milolii — is under a Tropical Storm Warning running from early this evening through Saturday afternoon. Winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 60 mph are expected, and some cells may push gusts toward 58 to 73 mph. Local impacts: The wind can peel back roofing and siding, wreck carports and sheds, snap large trees and blow down fences and road signs. Scattered debris could block some roads, and power outages are possible where lines are above ground. Along the shore, localized storm surge of 1 to 3 feet could flood low ground. What to do: Finish storm preparations this afternoon — once the wind arrives, stay inside. Secure or move indoors everything that could become a projectile.
