Tropical Storm Warning for Big Island Waters Through Saturday Afternoon

Hilo, Hawaii — The National Weather Service in Honolulu has put the waters around the Big Island under a Tropical Storm Warning, effective Friday morning and running through Saturday afternoon local time.

What is happening:

Tropical storm conditions are expected in the Alenuihaha Channel and the Big Island's windward, leeward, and southeast waters. Forecasters say east winds of 35 to 45 knots will whip through the area, kicking seas up to 15 to 20 feet. Conditions are expected to deteriorate through the day and into the weekend.

Local impacts:

The powerful winds will build dangerous seas capable of capsizing or damaging boats, and blowing spray will sharply cut visibility for anyone on the water.

What to do:

- Boaters and mariners should stay in port rather than heading out.

- Anyone already on the water should change course to calmer conditions if possible.

- Secure vessels and gear for severe weather before conditions get worse.
