Naalehu, Hawaii — What is happening: The southeastern Big Island, including Naalehu and Pahala, is under a Tropical Storm Warning. Forecasters expect 30 to 40 mph winds with gusts to 55 mph, with the worst of it from early this evening through tonight. Stronger cells could push gusts toward 58 to 73 mph. Local impacts: Wind damage could include torn roofing and siding, broken windows and garage doors, damaged carports and sheds, and snapped or uprooted trees. Debris may make some roads impassable, and scattered power outages are possible. Low-lying coastal areas could see 1 to 3 feet of storm-surge water. What to do: Get to safe shelter before the wind turns hazardous this evening. Move anything loose — patio furniture, grills, trash cans — inside or tie it down.
