Bradshaw Army Airfield, Hawaii — What is happening: The interior of the Big Island, including the Bradshaw Army Airfield area, faces a double threat: tropical-storm winds of 35 to 45 mph gusting to 60 mph from late this morning into early Saturday morning, plus extreme rainfall. An additional 4 to 8 inches of rain are forecast, with locally higher totals — enough to trigger dangerous flooding. Local impacts: Wind will snap trees, damage structures, and knock out power in places. The heavier danger is water: 4 to 8 inches of additional rain can turn roads into rivers and strand low-lying neighborhoods, with evacuations and rescues likely in the hardest-hit spots. What to do: Heed any flood watches and warnings — failure to act during extreme rainfall can be deadly. Shelter from the wind now and keep clear of flood-prone roads and stream crossings.
