Hurricane Force Wind Warning for Bering Sea Offshore Through Monday Evening
Bering Sea, Alaska — The National Weather Service in Anchorage has issued a Hurricane Force Wind Warning for offshore waters of the Bering Sea, west of 180 degrees and east of the International Date Line, in effect through Monday evening.
What is happening:
Southwest winds are running 30 to 45 knots today with seas of 16 to 24 feet. Tonight winds ease briefly, then turn southeast at 25 to 40 knots after midnight with rain. On Monday, southeast winds strengthen to 40 to 55 knots, becoming south at 50 to 65 knots in the afternoon, with seas building to 23 to 35 feet. Monday night brings southwest winds of 45 to 60 knots and seas of 21 to 36 feet. Conditions ease Tuesday as southwest winds drop back to 20 to 35 knots.
Local impacts:
Hurricane-force gusts and towering seas up to 35 feet make this stretch of the Bering Sea extremely dangerous for any vessel caught in it. Heavy rain will cut visibility at times, and the combination of high wind and huge waves can swamp or damage ships that stay in the warning area.
What to do:
- Mariners should stay out of the warned waters and head for safe harbor well before conditions peak Monday afternoon.
- Secure all gear and cargo, and check that safety equipment is ready.
- Keep monitoring the latest marine forecast from the National Weather Service, and do not attempt a crossing until the warning has ended.
