# Disaster Proclamation for Kansas as Hurricane Polo Remnants Bring Flood Threat

**Topeka, Kansas —** Governor Laura Kelly has issued a verbal state of disaster emergency proclamation for Kansas as tropical moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Polo collides with a fall storm system, setting the state up for a serious round of flooding.

**What is happening:** The tropical air left over from Hurricane Polo will pour across Kansas through Thursday, mixing with an early fall system. Forecasters expect widespread rainfall of one to three inches, with isolated spots picking up more than six inches. Across northern Kansas the rain is falling on ground that is already saturated — a setup for flash flooding and river flooding, with several rivers possibly reaching minor or moderate flood stages and smaller streams jumping their banks. The rain and storms should end Friday morning, but river flooding could hang around into the weekend.

**Local impacts:** Swift-water search and rescue teams have been prepositioned across the state, and the Kansas Division of Emergency Management has partially activated the State Emergency Operations Center for around-the-clock operations. The center is staffed by state emergency management, the Kansas National Guard, the State Fire Marshal, the Department of Transportation, Wildlife and Parks, and the National Weather Service — ready to back up local counties and first responders.

**What to do:**

- If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.

- Avoid flooded areas and follow guidance from local officials.

- Never drive through a flooded roadway — turn around, don't drown.
