2026 Coastal Defense: Homeowner & Generator Safety Manual

2026 Coastal Defense: Homeowner & Generator Safety Manual

A Special Report by W-News Newsroom & The Hurricane Center

For those living on the coast, the 2026 season requires more than just a kit; it requires structural vigilance and the safe management of backup power.

1. The Coastal Homeowner’s Checklist

Coastal properties face the dual threat of high-velocity winds and corrosive saltwater surge.

Structural Integrity

  • Roof Straps: Ensure your home has "hurricane straps" (galvanized steel) connecting the roof rafters to the wall studs. This prevents "roof uplift" during Category 3+ winds.
  • Impact-Rated Openings: Coastal homes should ideally have Impact-Rated windows. If using plywood, ensure it is 5/8" thick and secured with barrel bolts or "ply-locks" rather than just nails.
  • Soffit Reinforcement: Many homes lose their roofs because the soffits (under the eaves) blow out, allowing wind to pressurize the attic. Ensure soffits are stainless steel and screwed into the framing.

Surge Protection

  • Elevate Utilities: If possible, ensure your AC compressor, pool pumps, and generator pads are elevated above the local base flood elevation.
  • Drainage: Clear all gutters and ensure your "swales" (the dips in your yard) are free of debris to allow water to flow away from the foundation.

2. The Golden Rules of Generator Safety

Generators are lifesavers, but they can be silent killers if used incorrectly. Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning is a leading cause of post-storm fatalities.

Location, Location, Location

  • The Driveway Rule: NEVER run a generator inside a garage, even if the door is open. CO gas can build up to lethal levels in minutes and seep into the house.
  • The 20-Foot Rule: Place the generator in the driveway at least 20 feet away from any window, door, or vent.
  • Orientation: Point the generator's exhaust pipe away from the house.

Operation & Maintenance

  • Dryness: Use a "generator tent" or a specific outdoor cover if it is raining. Never operate a generator in standing water.
  • The Refuel Cooling Period: Never add fuel to a running generator or a hot engine. Let it cool for at least 15-20 minutes before refueling to prevent a flash fire.
  • Direct Connection: Plug appliances directly into the generator using heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords. Do not "backfeed" your house by plugging the generator into a wall outlet.

3. Garage & Storage Safety

  • Clear the Garage: Your garage should be used to store your vehicles and outdoor furniture before the storm. It is not a workspace during the storm.
  • Fuel Storage: Store gasoline in approved containers in a well-ventilated area, never inside the home or near a water heater. Use a fuel stabilizer to keep gas fresh for the duration of the season.

W-News Safety Alert: If you feel dizzy, weak, or have a headache while using a generator, get to fresh air immediately and call for help.
