Wildfires in Northeast Rage On; State Parks Employee Killed in New York

NEW YORK – Wildfires are spreading across parts of the Northeast, significantly impacting areas along the New York-New Jersey border. On Saturday, November 9, an 18-year-old New York State Parks employee tragically lost his life while assisting in efforts to contain the flames.

Air quality alerts remain in effect for the New York City area and nearby Orange and Putnam counties as smoke continues to impact the region. Many residents woke up to smoke-filled air and visible haze over the weekend, prompting health warnings from officials.

The New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) reported that the air quality index reached a "very unhealthy" level of 201, posing serious risks to those outdoors. NYCEM advised on social media that wearing high-quality masks could help reduce exposure to harmful pollutants.

Smoke and Flames Spread Across New York and New Jersey

Helicopter footage captured over Greenwood Lake, New York, shows ongoing firefighting efforts near the state border. In New Jersey, the Jennings Creek Wildfire has burned over 2,500 acres and is threatening 25 structures with containment at 0%.

TNW News General Manager Todd Nardone shared that officials recommend limiting outdoor activities and avoiding exposure to the smoke, especially for those with preexisting health conditions. "Limit outdoor activity to an hour or less," officials advised.

A shift in wind patterns could further push the smoke northward into upstate New York, potentially affecting air quality in more areas, according to the National Weather Service in Albany. Many New York City residents reported smelling smoke on Saturday morning, describing their homes as having a "campfire scent."

Tragic Loss and Statement from Governor Kathy Hochul

Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus confirmed the tragic death of New York State Parks employee Dariel Vasquez, who was working to contain a fire in Sterling Forest near Greenwood Lake, New York. New York State Police are investigating the incident.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences, stating, "I am deeply saddened by the loss of Dariel Vasquez. My prayers go out to his family, friends, and coworkers during this difficult time. His dedication to protecting New Yorkers and bravery on the front lines will be remembered."

Additional Wildfire Alerts in the Northeast

Several additional fires have been reported in northern New Jersey, including multiple acres burning in Englewood Cliffs. The extended dry period has placed millions from Connecticut to Massachusetts under Fire Weather Warnings as conditions remain ripe for new wildfires.

In New York City, firefighters responded to multiple fires on Friday, including one in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, with smoke occasionally visible across the city. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has urged residents to conserve water during this prolonged dry spell and ongoing wildfire crisis.

Rain Expected to Improve Conditions

Relief may be on the way as a cold front is forecasted to bring rainfall to the region late Sunday into Monday. The expected rain should help improve air quality and provide a break in the dry conditions fueling these fires.

TNW News will continue to monitor and provide updates as this situation unfolds.
