Tornado Warning for Pender County Through 2:00 PM

A weather alert screen showing a tornado warning for North Carolina counties.

Burgaw, N.C. — A tornado warning is in effect for northwestern Pender County in southeastern North Carolina until 2:00 PM ET Sunday. The National Weather Service in Wilmington issued the warning after radar picked up rotation inside a fast-moving thunderstorm.

What is happening: At 1:20 PM, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Rooks, about 14 miles west of Burgaw. The storm is moving northeast at 40 miles per hour — a quick pace, which means it will reach new ground fast. Forecasters say radar is showing rotation inside the storm.

Local impacts: A tornado can bring flying debris that is dangerous to anyone caught without shelter. Mobile homes can be damaged or destroyed, and roofs, windows, and vehicles are at risk. Tree damage is likely along the storm's path.

What to do:

- Take cover now — move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a well-built building, away from windows.

- If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.

- Do not wait to see the tornado before acting.

- This warning covers Penderlea, Willard, Atkinson, and Watha.
