# Tornado Warning for Grant and Hidalgo Counties Through 5:00 PM

Grant and Hidalgo Counties, NM —

**What is happening:** The National Weather Service in El Paso has issued a Tornado Warning for central Grant County and north central Hidalgo County in southwestern New Mexico, in effect until 5:00 PM MDT. At 4:27 PM MDT, radar showed a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado about 9 miles southeast of Redrock, moving north at 35 mph. Rotation was indicated on radar — this means the storm is showing the spinning signature of a possible tornado, even though one has not been confirmed on the ground.

**Local impacts:** Flying debris will be dangerous to anyone caught without shelter. Mobile homes can be damaged or destroyed. Quarter-size hail is falling with this storm, and roofs, windows, and vehicles are at risk from both hail and wind. Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm as well, which can make roads slick and visibility poor in a matter of minutes.

**What to do:**

- Take cover now — go to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

- Stay away from windows.

- If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.
