A weather alert screen showing a tornado warning for North Carolina counties.

UPDATE — Sunday, October 11, 1:21 PM CT: The National Weather Service in Raleigh has cancelled the tornado warning for Franklin and Warren counties — the tornado threat has diminished. Damaging winds remain likely, and a Severe Thunderstorm Warning stays in effect for the area. A Tornado Watch continues for central North Carolina until 5 PM EDT.

**Henderson, N.C. —** A severe thunderstorm showing rotation on radar has put Franklin and Warren counties under a Tornado Warning until 2:30 PM EDT Sunday.

**What is happening:** At 2:08 PM EDT, the National Weather Service in Raleigh picked up rotation inside a severe thunderstorm about 9 miles southeast of Henderson, moving north at 20 mph. Radar-indicated rotation means a tornado could form at any moment — or may already be on the ground where spotters cannot see it. Afton is among the locations in the storm's path.

**Local impacts:** Flying debris will be dangerous to anyone caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Expect damage to roofs, windows and vehicles, with tree damage likely across the warned area.

**What to do:**

- Take cover NOW.

- Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

- Avoid windows.

- If you are outdoors, in a mobile home or in a vehicle, get to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.
