# Tornado Warning for Durham and Wake Counties Through 1:00 PM

**Raleigh, N.C. —** A tornado warning is in effect for Durham and Wake counties until 1:00 PM ET Sunday. The National Weather Service in Raleigh issued the warning after radar picked up rotation inside a strong thunderstorm.

**What is happening:** At 12:38 PM ET, the storm was over RDU International, about 7 miles north of Cary, moving northeast at 30 mph. The dangerous part of the storm should reach Raleigh around 12:45 PM. Other spots in the path include the Research Triangle, William B. Umstead State Park, Morrisville, Rollingview Marina, and the Falls Lake Boat Ramp. Drivers on Interstate 40 between mile markers 280 and 286, Interstate 540 between mile markers 0 and 10, and the Durham Freeway between mile markers 2 and 4 should stay alert.

**Local impacts:** A tornado is the main threat, with radar showing the storm is spinning. Flying debris will be dangerous to anyone caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Expect damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles, plus tree damage.

**What to do:**

- Get to the lowest floor of a sturdy building now — an interior room with no windows.

- Stay away from windows and cover your head.

- If you are in a mobile home, leave it for a sturdier shelter.

- If you are driving, pull off the highway and get inside a strong building.
