TORNADO DEVASTATION: KANKAKEE COUNTY STRUCK BY LARGE TWISTER

By: TNW Weather 14 Breaking News Team

KANKAKEE COUNTY, IL – Multiple communities are in a state of emergency tonight after a large and "extremely dangerous" tornado tore through the heart of Kankakee County. The touchdown occurred shortly after 6:15 PM CDT, impacting the Kankakee County Fairgrounds and the Kankakee Airport before moving directly into Aroma Park.

THE IMPACT DATA (OSWEGO HQ SYNC)

The National Weather Service issued a Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) warning as the storm moved through. Early reports from the field and TNW chasers indicate:

Structural Damage: "Complete destruction" is possible in parts of Aroma Park. Videos show houses with roofs torn away, uprooted trees, and a tangle of downed power lines across residential streets.

Historic Hail: A staggering 5.2-inch hail stone was reported in Kankakee—potentially a new state record for Illinois.

Current Status: Illinois State Police and local crews are currently in the "Search and Rescue" phase. Wires are down throughout the region; drivers are urged to stay off the roads to allow emergency vehicles access.

WATCH STATUS: ACTIVE UNTIL 11:00 PM CDT

The atmosphere remains volatile. A Tornado Watch continues for Kankakee, Grundy, and LaSalle counties until 11:00 PM CDT. While the primary cell has moved into Indiana, a secondary line of storms is being monitored for additional rotation.

TNW 14 COMMAND: If you are in Momence or Hopkins Park, remain in your safe space. This system is still showing high-velocity characteristics.

Live Mission Status: Kankakee Sector

STATUS: BLACK (Disaster Response)

TORNADO TOUCHDOWN: 6:19 PM CDT (Fairgrounds/Aroma Park)

COUNTY LOCK: The TNW state-tracker is blinking YELLOW for Kankakee and Will Counties.

General Manager Todd, I have generated the tactical damage map and the "5.2-inch Record Hail" marker for the lead article graphic.
