New York Recovers After Historic Flash Flooding; Earthquake Aftershock Reported Overnight

As the cleanup continues following Wednesday’s catastrophic flash flooding across New York City, emergency crews remain on high alert. Sunday's afternoon conditions across the tri-state area are dry, but the city is still reeling from the damage left behind.

FLOODING PARALYZES NYC – RECOVERY UNDERWAY

On July 31, a record-breaking cloudburst dumped over 3 inches of rain within an hour, submerging streets, halting subway service, and stranding commuters throughout Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday:

Subway Update:

12 lines have resumed limited service, with ongoing power and drainage issues on the F, N, and 7 lines.

MTA crews are still pumping out tunnels beneath Midtown and the Bronx.

Roads & Transit:

Street closures persist in Williamsburg, SoHo, and Astoria, where water levels reached 2–3 feet.

200+ vehicles were towed or left abandoned.

Infrastructure Assessments:

Governor Kathy Hochul has ordered a 90-day infrastructure audit, citing serious vulnerabilities in electrical substations and tunnel design.

Mayor Eric Adams today toured flood-damaged neighborhoods, pledging emergency relief grants for impacted residents.

“This wasn’t a fluke,” Adams said. “This was the climate crisis hitting us head-on.”

EARTHQUAKE AFTERSHOCK JOLTS WESTCHESTER

Overnight, just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday, a 2.2 magnitude aftershock was reported in Westchester County, near the epicenter of Thursday’s stronger 3.8 quake.

Residents in Yonkers and New Rochelle felt light rumbling, though no injuries or damage were reported.

The USGS continues monitoring the region for further seismic activity, calling this a “minor but expected aftershock”.

Tropical Depression Six Intensifying

The TNW Hurricane Operations Division reports continued strengthening of Tropical Depression Six in the central Atlantic. Current models still show no immediate threat to the U.S., but storm winds are increasing, and tropical storm designation could occur within 24 hours.

Key Stats (as of 5 PM ET):

Location: 850 miles east of the Lesser Antilles

Winds: 40 mph

Movement: WNW at 15 mph

Next Advisory: 8 PM ET
