Governor Hochul Activates Emergency Powers
A State of Emergency is now in effect for Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, Richmond, Suffolk, and Westchester Counties, as a powerful Nor’easter takes aim at Downstate New York.
Governor Kathy Hochul made the announcement Sunday afternoon, warning residents to prepare for major flooding, dangerous winds, and extended rainfall.
“The safety of New Yorkers is my top priority,” Hochul said. “Please stay alert, stay home if possible, and avoid the coasts until the storm has passed.”
Flooding & Wind Dangers
Coastal Flood Warning: 12 PM Sunday – 8 PM Monday
Moderate to major coastal flooding possible along the South Shore of Long Island and Jamaica Bay.
High Wind Warning: Eastern Suffolk
Gusts may top 60 mph, bringing downed trees, power outages, and travel hazards.
MTA Ban: 3 PM Sunday – 6 PM Monday
Empty tractor-trailers and tandem trucks banned from all MTA bridges during the height of the storm.
Rainfall Threat
Up to 3 inches of rain could soak the NYC metro, Long Island, and Lower Hudson Valley, causing urban flooding in poor drainage areas.
Forecasters warn of extended downpours lasting through Monday night.
7,100 Utility Workers Deployed
Over 1,600 additional line crews are on standby across Long Island, NYC, and the Hudson Valley, part of 7,118 emergency personnel statewide.
Utility companies including Con Edison, PSEG LI, and NYSEG have activated their storm command centers, ready to respond around the clock.
