State of Emergency Request for Navajo County After Heber Storm

Heber-Overgaard, Arizona — What is happening: State Representative Walt Blackman is calling on Governor Katie Hobbs to declare a state of emergency for Navajo County after a powerful storm tore through the Heber-Overgaard area Wednesday evening. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for the area Wednesday night, and radar and damage photos point to a likely tornado touchdown, though the Weather Service has not officially confirmed one. Local impacts: The storm uprooted trees, knocked down utility poles, and damaged homes. Navopache Electric Cooperative described catastrophic damage to its electrical infrastructure, with outages continuing into Thursday. At least one person was injured. A reception center opened at the Navajo County Heber Complex, and the Red Cross is coordinating shelter for displaced residents. Governor Hobbs said her administration is coordinating with Navajo County Emergency Management on sheltering and support, directing state emergency, public safety, and transportation crews to assist — though she has not yet said whether she will grant the emergency declaration request. What to do: - Stay out of damaged areas so crews can work safely. - If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately. - Treat every downed power line as live and keep your distance. - Check on neighbors, especially older residents.
