Trenton, New Jersey — Gov. Mikie Sherrill has declared a state of emergency across eight New Jersey counties as the season's first nor'easter bears down on the Garden State, with the hardest impacts expected tonight and running through Sunday.

## What is happening:

The declaration, signed as Executive Order No. 25, took effect at 5:00 PM Friday for Atlantic, Burlington, Cape May, Cumberland, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Salem counties — the counties forecasters say face the greatest risk. The order activates the State Emergency Operations Center, putting the State Police, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Transportation, and county emergency management offices on a coordinated footing to share information and move resources where the storm hits hardest.

The nor'easter is expected to bring damaging winds, heavy rain, significant coastal flooding, and beach erosion. Wind gusts could reach 60 miles an hour along the shore, while inland areas see 30 to 45 mph. South Jersey could pick up up to three inches of rain, and the National Weather Service warns of widespread roadway flooding. The setup is about as bad as it gets for the coast: northeasterly winds have been piling water onshore since Monday, and the weekend's full-moon high tides — Saturday morning and again Saturday night — will ride on top of that surge. Manasquan has already issued a voluntary evacuation order, and forecasters say power outages are likely.
