Severe Weather Briefing: Kentucky’s Recovery Efforts Continue

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Governor Andy Beshear provided an update today on the ongoing response to the severe winter storm that impacted much of Kentucky. The state is now transitioning from emergency search-and-rescue operations to stabilization efforts.

"Kentuckians always come together in times of need, and I’ve seen that once again throughout this disaster response," Gov. Beshear said. "Your resilience and compassion continue to inspire me."

Weather Conditions

• Frigid temperatures will persist through Friday morning.
• A warming trend is expected this weekend into next week.

Storm Impacts & Recovery

• Fatalities: The storm-related death toll remains at 14.
• Power Outages: 653 customers remain without power (down from a peak of 43,124).
• Water & Wastewater:
  6,545 customers remain without drinking water.
  45,645 are under boil water advisories.
  2 wastewater systems are non-operational; 25 are under limited operation.
• Infrastructure & Transportation:
  186 state highways remain closed due to flooding, mudslides, and rockslides.
  KYTC crews are actively clearing roads, but icy conditions persist.
  Motorists should check GoKY.ky.gov before traveling and avoid flooded roads.

Federal Assistance

• President Donald Trump has signed an emergency disaster declaration for Kentucky.
• Gov. Beshear has applied for FEMA individual assistance, which provides up to $43,600 per qualifying household for recovery needs.

Disaster Relief & Assistance

• Team Kentucky Storm Relief Fund has raised over $199,000, prioritizing funeral expenses for victims.
• Emergency Shelters: 17 shelters remain open for displaced residents.
• Kentucky National Guard: 230 personnel are deployed, assisting with road access and supply deliveries.
• State Parks Housing: 218 people are staying in four state parks, with additional rooms available.

• Give Blood: The Governor and First Lady will host a blood drive on Monday, Feb. 24, in the State Capitol Rotunda.

Looking Ahead

• The Governor announced $6 million from Kentucky’s Disaster Recovery Program to fund 32 new homes in Perry County’s Skyview neighborhood for survivors of the 2022 and 2025 floods.
• Discussions are ongoing with the Kentucky legislature to create a long-term recovery fund modeled after previous SAFE funds.
