Breaking news alert for severe thunderstorm warning in Yavapai County, Arizona.

Yavapai County, AZ —

What is happening:

The National Weather Service in Flagstaff has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Yavapai County in west central Arizona, in effect until 7:30 AM MST (9:30 AM CT). As of 6:59 AM MST, radar showed a severe thunderstorm about 6 miles south of Yarnell and 31 miles southwest of Prescott, moving northeast at 50 miles per hour. Towns in the storm's path include Congress, Yarnell, Wilhoit, Peeples Valley, Kirkland, Skull Valley, Walnut Grove, and Stanton, along with State Route 89 between mile markers 266 and 304 and the Wolf Creek campgrounds.

Local impacts:

The storm is capable of producing ping pong ball-size hail and 60 mph wind gusts. Hail can damage roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Gusty winds can damage roofs and bring down branches and trees. Anyone caught outdoors, people or animals, could be hurt.

What to do:

- Get inside a well-built structure right now and stay away from windows.

- Move vehicles under cover if it is safe to do so — hail this size can break glass.

- Secure loose outdoor items before the wind picks up.

- Do not wait this one out outside — the storm is moving fast.
