Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Union County, NM Through 4:30 PM

UPDATE — Wednesday, September 30, 4:05 PM CT: The 4:00 PM MDT update keeps the Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Union County through 4:30 PM MDT. The storm was 10 miles southeast of Mount Dora — 13 miles west of Clayton — moving northeast at 20 mph with 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail. Torrential rain with this storm may cause flash flooding; hail piling up on roads can make driving hazardous. Do not drive through flooded roads.
Central Union County, NM — A severe thunderstorm is moving through central Union County, New Mexico, and a Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect through 4:30 PM MDT.
What is happening:
At 3:47 PM MDT, radar picked up a severe thunderstorm 12 miles south of Mount Dora — about 17 miles southwest of Clayton — tracking northeast at 20 mph. It is packing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail. Locations in its path include Clayton and Highway 64 between mile markers 415 and 429.
Local impacts:
Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Gusts to 60 mph can damage roofs, siding, and trees. Accumulations of small hail on roads can make driving very slick and hazardous.
What to do:
- Seek shelter inside a well-built structure and stay away from windows.
- Treat this storm as capable of damaging wind and large hail — do not wait outside.
- If you must drive, watch for slick spots where hail has piled up on the pavement.
