What is happening:

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for west central San Miguel County in northeastern New Mexico, running through 3:45 PM Mountain time. At 2:58 PM, radar picked up the storm about 5 miles northeast of Villanueva — roughly 19 miles south of Las Vegas — driving north at 25 miles per hour.

Local impacts:

This storm is producing 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts and quarter-size hail — stones about an inch across, big enough to dent hoods and crack glass. Winds that strong can damage roofs, peel off siding, and bring down trees and limbs. Heavy rainfall is also coming down with the storm, and flash flooding can start with little warning. Towns directly in the path include Tecolote, Ribera, Romeroville, Villanueva, Villanueva State Park, Chapelle, Ojitos Frios, Los Montoyas, and Sena. Drivers on Interstate 25 near mile markers 321 and north should expect dangerous, fast-changing conditions.

What to do:

- Get inside a well-built structure now and stay away from windows.

- Bring pets and anything loose indoors if you can do it safely and quickly.

- Do not drive through flooded roadways — most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- If you hear roaring or see rapidly rising water, get to higher ground immediately.
