Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Rio Arriba and Sandoval Counties Through 8:45 PM MDT

Cuba, NM — The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for south-central Rio Arriba County and northeastern Sandoval County in north-central New Mexico, in effect through 8:45 PM MDT.
**What is happening:** At 8:01 PM MDT, a severe thunderstorm was located about 12 miles south of Cuba, drifting northeast at 30 mph. The storm is producing 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail, and it is firing off continuous cloud-to-ground lightning.
**Local impacts:** Quarter-size hail can smash windshields and dent vehicles. Wind gusts near 60 mph can tear limbs from trees and damage roofs and siding. Lightning is striking the ground continuously — it is one of nature's leading killers.
**What to do:**
- Seek shelter inside a well-built structure and stay away from windows.
- If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Do not wait.
- Be ready for a tornado: move to an interior room on the lowest floor if the storm turns severe.
