Breaking weather alert graphic for a thunderstorm warning.

Truth or Consequences, N.M. — A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for northwestern Sierra County until 1:15 AM MDT, as a powerful storm rolls through south-central New Mexico overnight.

What is happening: The National Weather Service in El Paso issued the warning at 12:42 AM MDT. A severe thunderstorm near Hillsboro is pushing northeast at 45 miles per hour. The warning covers northwestern Sierra County, including Cuchillo, Caballo, Truth or Consequences, Hillsboro, San Miguel, Kingston, Engle, the City of Elephant Butte, Palomas, and Ladd.

Local impacts: The storm is packing 60 mile-per-hour wind gusts and quarter-size hail. Hail this size can dent and crack vehicle windshields and body panels, and the high winds can tear at roofs and siding and knock down tree limbs.

What to do:

- Get inside and move to an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows.

- If you have a vehicle outside, move it under cover before the hail arrives.

- Avoid driving through the warned area — strong gusts can shove a car sideways.

- Stay put until the warning expires at 1:15 AM MDT.

If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.
