Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Northeastern Luna County Through 6:00 PM MDT

Deming, NM — The National Weather Service in El Paso has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for northeastern Luna County in southwestern New Mexico, in effect until 6:00 PM MDT.

What is happening:

At 5:28 PM MDT, a severe thunderstorm was located 12 miles southwest of Nutt, moving north at 30 miles per hour. Nutt, Uvas Valley, Cookes Peak, and Macho Springs are in the line of the storm.

Local impacts:

This is a dangerous storm — ping pong ball size hail and 60 mph wind gusts. The Weather Service warns that people and animals caught outdoors could be injured. Hail this size will damage roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles, and the winds can tear at roofs and snap tree limbs.

What to do:

- Get indoors now — do not stay outside to watch the storm.

- Move to an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows.

- Protect vehicles under cover if you can do so safely and quickly.

- If you are on the road, pull over well clear of traffic and stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on.
