Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, and Sandoval Counties Through 9:45 PM

A weather alert graphic for a thunderstorm warning.

San Ysidro, NM — A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for parts of north central New Mexico through 9:45 PM MDT Wednesday evening, covering northwestern Los Alamos County, south central Rio Arriba County, and central Sandoval County.

**What is happening:** At 8:43 PM MDT, National Weather Service radar tracked a severe thunderstorm about 10 miles west of San Ysidro — roughly 25 miles northwest of Rio Rancho — moving northeast at 30 miles per hour. The storm is pressing toward the Jemez Mountains and the communities along Highway 550.

**Local impacts:** This storm is packing 60 mile-per-hour wind gusts and small hail, strong enough to damage roofs, siding, and trees. Locations in the path include Cuba, Jemez Springs, San Ysidro, Fenton Lake State Park, Jemez State Monument, Jemez Pueblo, Zia Pueblo, Regina, and Gallina — including Highway 550 between mile markers 16 and 74.

**What to do:**

- Get inside a well-built structure right now and stay away from windows.

- Do not wait for thunder or rain — damaging winds from this storm can arrive before either.

- Secure anything outdoors that could blow around, and avoid driving through the storm's path.
